Spudnik Press

This class is an introduction to screen printing, with an emphasis on old-fashioned hand-drawn and hand-cut methods often used by poster printers. We will address design elements important to poster printing, such as color, communication and form vs. function. Students will print a group project the very first week, and spend the following weeks creating their own multicolor poster. Posters made in class need not advertise a real event, but they may do so, when appropriate. All materials are provided except for paper.

Aluminum plate lithography is becoming a popular alternative to traditional stone lithography, in which a limestone is used as the printing plate. Printing is done from a flat surface and depends on the opposition of oil and water. In this class, we will teach the methods that are the simplest and most dependable while yielding very similar results to traditional stone lithography. Students will experiment with many mark making materials, then learn to etch and print the plate. Because printing a litho requires isolated time with the press, we are keeping the class size to just 4 students. Each student will create their own edition of prints, as well as help a fellow student edition their work. Students need not have stone lithography experience. All materials except paper will be provided.

This is a one-day workshop is a quick introduction to screen printing onto fabric. Students will come with an image. We will show how to prepare the image, burn an image to a screen, and print the image onto a t-shirt. Each student will have time to print 5+ one color t-shirts by the end of the day. This workshop is a fun way to get exposed to the medium, and leave with a product that you designed yourself. All materials are provided except the T-Shirts. Students should bring up to 10 shirts to print on.
